KwikChex Warns: Thousands Are Falling into “Help Traps”

KwikChex is warning that thousands of consumers are falling into what it describes as “help traps” — services that present themselves as solutions but often inflict further devastating financial harm.

Two groups in particular are suffering losses totalling hundreds of millions globally.

KwikChex investigations reveal a significant surge in organised criminal networks targeting already vulnerable individuals — often those who have previously lost money to scams.

Scammed Investors

A Dangerous Second Wave: Recovery Fraud

A rapidly expanding second wave of fraud is now targeting victims of investment scams: investment recovery scams.

After losing money through crypto scams, fake trading platforms, boiler room operations, impersonation fraud, or dubious “alternative investments,” victims understandably search online for assistance. What they frequently encounter instead is another trap.

A Global Pattern of Double Harm

Investment fraud is now one of the largest categories of financial crime worldwide.

  • In the UK, the City of London Police reported £649 million lost to investment fraud in 2024.
  • According to UK Finance, £629.3 million was stolen in the first half of 2025 alone, with 66% of Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud originating online.
  • In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission reports annual fraud losses exceeding $10 billion, with investment scams generating the highest losses.

After the initial scam, victims are often targeted again in what authorities describe as “recovery room” fraud.

In the UK alone, between November 2024 and November 2025, Action Fraud received 5,553 recovery scam reports, with reported losses totalling £185.4 million.

Most fraud goes unreported. These figures likely represent only a small fraction of the true scale.

How Recovery Scammers Operate

Recovery scammers deploy sophisticated tactics, including:

  • Targeted social media adverts promising fund tracing
  • Paid Google search ads appearing above official guidance
  • Convincing websites impersonating real law firms
  • Fake positive reviews on platforms such as Google Maps and Trustpilot
  • Fake one-star reviews posted across genuine investment firm profiles directing victims to scam Telegram accounts
  • Cloned websites of legitimate businesses
  • Cold calls claiming funds have already been located
  • Direct approaches after victims post about losses online

They typically claim they can:

  • Trace crypto assets
  • Access frozen accounts
  • Work directly with regulators
  • Release “secured” compensation

They then demand:

  • Upfront legal fees
  • Administrative charges
  • “Insurance” or “bond” payments
  • Tax or court filing fees

Payment is commonly requested via bank transfer or cryptocurrency.

The risk of fraud within recovery services is extremely high — scams appear to outnumber legitimate operators.

KwikChex has uncovered thousands of examples and is escalating its interventions.

Timeshare Owners

Exit, Compensation and Trade-In Traps

Timeshare “exit,” “compensation,” and “trade-in” services have become fertile ground for organised fraud.

Evidence from both the UK and United States demonstrates how systematically these traps are deployed.

Why Timeshare Owners Are Vulnerable

Timeshare ownership presents unique structural vulnerabilities:

  • Long-term contractual commitments
  • Cross-border legal complexity (particularly UK–Spain disputes)
  • Conflicting interpretations of court rulings
  • Ongoing financial liabilities
  • Limited resale markets

This confusion is often amplified by cold-calling campaigns targeting known owner databases.

Law Enforcement Warnings

In the UK, the Serious Fraud Office continues investigations into alleged fraudulent timeshare services schemes. Previous major prosecutions — including cases such as Monster Travel and EZE Group — exposed call-centre-driven operations targeting thousands of owners with false promises of relinquishment or resale.

In the United States, the FBI has repeatedly warned about criminals targeting timeshare owners — including organised crime networks operating from Mexico.

Losses to timeshare assistance scams are estimated to have exceeded $1 billion.

Common Timeshare Scam Formats

  • “Guaranteed exit” services
  • Fake resale services
  • Cold calls claiming compensation has been secured
  • Fake Spanish legal claims
  • Rogue loan compensation services
  • Trade-in offers for alternative holiday or “investment” products
  • Replacement purchases presented as the only route to cancellation
  • Re-victimisation of prior scam victims

One of the Most Dangerous Variants

If an “exit solution” requires purchasing:

  • A holiday club
  • A fractional product
  • A voucher scheme
  • A supposed investment opportunity

It is highly likely to be another trap.

Shared Red Flags: Recovery & Timeshare Fraud

Both fraud categories rely on:

  • Unsolicited contact referencing prior losses
  • Upfront fees before verifiable work begins
  • Guarantees of success
  • Claims of privileged regulatory or court access
  • Urgency and pressure
  • Requests to move to encrypted messaging apps
  • Virtual offices with minimal operational footprint
  • Recently formed companies with clusters of positive reviews
  • False credentials
  • False claims of media coverage

Extreme Vulnerability

A significant proportion of timeshare owners are elderly, in poor health, or recently bereaved. Some have been persuaded to cash in investments, take out secured loans, or access pension funds to finance timeshare purchases or assistance services — leaving them in catastrophic financial circumstances later in life.

KwikChex has assisted many thousands of owners in avoiding further harm.

KwikChex Action & Safeguarding Initiatives

Founded in 2010, vetted and approved by UK Trading Standards, and a recipient of a Hero Award for fraud prevention and law enforcement support, KwikChex is expanding its safeguarding and justice initiatives in 2026.

Operation Deepclean

Operation Deepclean is a consumer protection initiative launched following the conviction of individuals in the £28 million “Monster Group” scam. It initially focused on fraudulent timeshare resale and exit operators and has now expanded to include investment and recovery fraud.

It targets abuse of:

  • Online reviews
  • Social media platforms
  • Google Ads
  • Virtual offices
  • Company registrations
  • Artificial Intelligence tools

Through cooperation with responsible platforms and service providers, KwikChex aims to substantially reduce these threats.

The Timeshare Clarity Initiative

This initiative is designed to bring clarity, accountability, and practical understanding to the complex European timeshare landscape.

How to Seek Help Safely

There is no shortage of general anti-fraud advice online — yet fraud harm continues to rise sharply. Reporting platforms exist, but few provide practical assistance regarding recovery options.

The first step if you suspect you have been defrauded is to contact your payment provider immediately. Recovery prospects depend heavily on how funds were sent and how quickly you act.

  • Credit/Debit Cards: Request a chargeback or dispute. Credit cards generally offer stronger protections.
  • Bank Transfers: Contact your bank immediately to request a recall. This is most effective within 3–4 days.
  • Payment Apps: Use the official dispute process within the app.
  • Gift Cards: Contact the issuing retailer immediately to attempt a freeze.
  • Cryptocurrency: Contact the exchange used. While often irreversible, tracing or freezing may sometimes be possible.

If refunds are not secured, do not simply search online for recovery services.

Do not rely on Google Ads, online reviews, or social media claims.

KwikChex provides accurate, free-of-charge information to clarify safe options.
